Frequently asked questions.
Are your live animals and specimens sourced sustainably?
Yes. All of the live marine animals and preserved specimens used in our programs have been ethically and sustainably sourced through licensed suppliers, including our partner GBR Aquatics, which is a certified Reef Guardian Fisher.
Are the live marine animals safe for children to handle?
Yes. The safety of both the children and animals are our highest priority. All of the species in our hands-on interactions have been carefully selected based on their suitability for safe handling and age appropriateness. Furthermore, the animals selected are robust to handling and transport.
Can you custmise a program to suit our particular curriculum requirements?
Absolutely! While we do have a selection of ready-made programs, we are more than happy to tailor sessions to match particular learning goals or curriculum outcomes. Whether you are teaching science, geography, math or art, we can curate a program to meet your needs.
Do teachers/parents need to be present during the session?
For school-based sessions, we require a teacher or responsible staff member to be present. Similarly, for all early learning sessions, educators are required to be present to ensure compliance with staff-to-child ratios. For community events or SEAlebrations, parental supervision is recommended for children under 12.
What regions do you service?
While we primarily operate in Cairns, periodically throughout the year Reef LiteraSEA plans to broaden its reach and travel down to Townsville, and as far north as Cooktown. But the reef is for everyone. We are also continually trying to procure funding (through grants and donations) to allow us to venture beyond Far North Queensland. After all, why should outback communities miss out? Let us know if you want us to come and visit your remote community.
How do I book or get a quote?
You can contact us directly via phone (0422259325) or email us at katrinakaposi@reefliterasea.com. Let us know your location, group size, preferred dates, and any specific requirements, and we’ll send through a tailored quote.
What if one of our students cannot afford it?
Equity is a core value at Reef LiteraSEA. We want our programs to be accessible for everyone. Rather than charging per person, where possible, we strongly encourage the schools or organisations to cover the costs of this incredible learning opportunity. However, we understand this may not always be possible. In events where there is a genuine risk of a student missing out, please contact us confidentially. We will always do our best to ensure no child misses out.
Can we nominate for our proceeds to go to a different charity?
Reef LiteraSEA donate will donate 5% of all proceeds from your visit to a charity of your choice. While we believe that the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre, Tangaroa Blue, Sharks and Rays Australia and Headspace are all worthy participants, we understand that your school or organisation may have a strong connection to another charitity. Just let us know! Alternatively, you may also nominate your donation to go towards funding our many not for profit PoSEAtivity initiatives; Vitamin SEA’ hospital visits, ‘SEAnic Roadtrips’ which allow us to take the reef to the outback or to our beach clean-up ‘SEArch Parties’.
